André Turner was born in New York City. He is the fifth child of a family of eight children. Coming from a large family, he understood the village concept at an early age "It takes a whole village to raise a child." Embracing this concept allowed him to develop an affinity for community and family.
André Turner received his Bachelor Degree in History from Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. He has worked as an educator with the Norfolk and Baltimore City Public School systems.
André lectures to youth and adults about self-empowerment, self-confidence and fulfillment. His background as an educator allows him to combine creative and interactive ways of conveying complex and abstract principles into simple everyday language. He has spoken to numerous youth at schools and organizations throughout Maryland.
André began his career working with at risk youth in Virginia at the Pines Treatment facility. Through individual counseling and mentoring he developed treatment plans to young people promoting positive self-esteem, better coping skills and a positive outlook on life.
During the summer of 1999 he implemented a leadership program for the students at City College called the Knights of Valor. The program was designed to teach leadership skills. During the spring of 2000, Andre completed his manhood training and was incorporated into the Egbe Akokonrin Adult Male Rites of Passage. He now facilitates youth and adult male rites of passage programs in Baltimore. André Turner is committed to youth empowerment and leadership and does workshops throughout Baltimore. Mr. Turner is currently employed with The Men’s Center where he is committed to improving relationships that strengthen connections between men, children, and families in East Baltimore.
